Movie critic Craig Outhier's irreverent guide to the best and worst of what's now playing in theaters. This week: "Blindsight" feels its way to ironic warmth; Outhier's got nothing but a cold hand for "21."

1. Blindsight: Ugh! These near-summer movie doldrums are killing me. For temporary relief, check out this triumphant mountain-climbing doc at the Harkins Valley Art.
2. The Bank Job: If there’s a “job” in it, Jason Statham’s your man. Reprising role from “The Italian Job” in 2009 sequel.
3. The Hammer: Adam Carolla’s bob-and-weave comic style proves surprisingly effective in this nimble little sports romance.
4. Horton Hears a Who!: All alone in the family-film section until “Nim’s Island” – with Jodie Foster and Abigail Breslin – opens next week.
5. Run Fatboy Run: Simon Pegg (“Shaun of the Dead”) goes anaerobic for love in David Schwimmer’s directorial debut. | | |
1. Married Life Jeez, can we stop beating up the 50s already? A sad, pointless parody of Douglas Sirk.
2. 21: Kevin Spacey gets dealt a middling hand in this slavishly predictable tale of blackjack scammers.
3. Stop-Loss: Director Kimberly Peirce turns the issue of forced redeployment into an erratic and uncertain anti-war drama. It’s pro-soldier, but aren’t they all?
4. Drillbit Taylor: Owen Wilson’s blissed-out slacker routine doesn’t really fly when he’s playing a homeless scam-artist.
5. Under the Same Moon: For a less cheaply sentimental take on immigration, wait for “The Visitor” next month. |
