Insley scores kudos for ‘Wine’

Alt-country singer/songwriter Dave Insley, who honed his craft in the Valley with such bands as The Nitpickers and Trophy Husbands before going solo and moving to Austin, Texas, has already garnered some national attention for his third solo album, “West Texas Wine,” released on March 11.

Countrystandardtime.com, one of the better Web sites for country music news, features and CD reviews, calls “West Texas Wine” a “solid, engaging recording,” and states that the singer “may have left Arizona for Austin, but he hasn’t let the neon flame he carries for vintage honky-tonk dim ... with a reedy baritone recalling early Willie Nelson (vibrato and all), Insley’s delivery and material make him less of a singer, more of a storyteller.” Plenty of the tunes on the disc, including the title track, “Geneva,” and the album’s lead-off cut, “Beatin’ Ya Down,” were honed on Valley stages at the Yucca Tap Room and Club Mardi Gras. Ex-Lennon girlfriend May Pang to appear at Rock Star Gallery

Fans of John Lennon won’t want to miss when May Pang makes an appearance April 11-12 at the Rock Star Gallery, 15520 N. Scottsdale Road to promote her new book, “Instamatic Karma: Photographs of John Lennon.” In 1973, after Lennon had split with wife Yoko Ono, the former Beatle took up with Pang (his and Ono’s personal assistant), reportedly at the behest of Ono. Lennon and Pang stayed together for 18 months before Lennon returned to Ono in 1975. Pang’s memoir of her time with Lennon (a period Lennon later referred to as his “lost weekend”), titled “Loving John: The Untold Story,” came out in 1983, while “Instamatic Karma: Photographs of John Lennon” contains personal photographs of the late singer/songwriter, including the last known photo of Lennon and former Beatles comrade Paul McCartney. For more info on Pang’s visit to the Rock Star Gallery call (480) 275-4501 or visit rockstargallery.net.
