| Festival scores diverse headliners Fergie, My Chemical Romance | ||||||||||||||||||||||

“We’ve always based the event — at least four of the first five years — on mainstream alternative,” explains Koziol, who two years ago eschewed alternative in favor of guitar legend Jeff Beck and blues rockers John Mayer Trio as the festival headliners. “Last year we learned a valuable lesson — we had (adult alternative acts) Lifehouse on Friday night and The Fray on Saturday, and effectively what we saw is that we kind of split the audience. “Friday was way down, and then Saturday we had a great day,” continues Koziol. “Coming into this year, one of our main goals was to go back to really differentiating Friday from Saturday.” With that in mind, Koziol lined up alt-pop/punk band My Chemical Romance for Friday and pop princess Fergie to headline Saturday — two acts that couldn’t be more opposite. While My Chemical Romance will certainly bring out everyone from goth-punks to alternative music fans in their teens through their 30s, Fergie draws a more diverse crowd. “It seems like Fergie’s demographic is 6 to 66,” Koziol says. “My little 10-year-old has got these little girls at school all over him asking, ‘Can we get backstage passes?’ and then I have grandmothers calling me saying, ‘Hey, I love Fergie,’ and then the 20- and 30-somethings in between.” Contact Chris Hansen Orf by email, or phone (480) 898-5684 |
