MADE IN THE SHADE: CK’s Tavern & Grill draws a diverse crowd with its spacious patio and large beer selection.

CK’s proves there’s nightlife in Ahwatukee Foothills

The scene: CK's Tavern & Grill, an Ahwatukee Foothills neighborhood sports haunt, is packed during a Suns game night. We can’t believe our eyes considering we’re in a city that isn’t known for its hot nightlife.

The bar draws more of a crowd than some game nights at spots like Scottsdale’s Upper Deck Sports Grill or even Chandler’s Majerle’s Sports Grill.

There’s everyone here from guys who look like truckers to business types to young women showing their team spirit in purple-and-orange team jerseys. They’re watching the game on one of the tavern’s 30-plus TVs. A 20-something guy garners a few giggles from the bar with a humorous T-shirt.

Encased sports jerseys and team memorabilia decorates the walls. There’s also a Touch Tunes jukebox, two pool tables and large patio. Most people are inside on this night, however.

The menu: Burgers, sandwiches, pasta, wings and typical bar food fill the menu. Other items include the chimichanga, fish burrito and meatloaf. Surprisingly, CK’s offers a large beer menu with uncommon options such as Boddingtons, Ace Pear Cider, Four Peaks Hefe and Moose Drool Brown Ale. The bar also offers the Coor’s Light Super Cold Draft, which most bars don’t carry. The brew is dispensed from a mountain draft tower that forms an outer layer of real ice. While we’re not big Coor’s fans, we recommend trying this ice-cold beer, especially while watching a game.

The music:
Basketball, baseball and other games usually take center stage at this sports bar. However live Valley bands such as Shirley’s Temple, Shelby James and Freddy Thunder rock CK’s Thursday through Sunday.

Happy hour: 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday. Specials include $2.50 16-ounce domestic drafts, domestic bottles and well drinks; $3.25 house wine and $3.50 25-ounce domestic drafts. Half-off a dozen and half-dozen wings, boneless raspberry wings, Southwest dip, fried zucchini, mozzarella sticks, chips and salsa, and jumbo skins.

The verdict: With such a large beer menu, we’re sure to swing by CK’s again the next time we find ourselves in Ahwatukee Foothills. There may be hope for this city yet when it comes to nightlife.
