Rank: Miss Pettigrew tickles, but Semi-Pro? Probably not

Movie critic Craig Outhier's irreverent guide to the best and worst of what's now playing in theaters. This week: Miss Pettigrew is lively, while Semi-Pro is semi-probably not.

Hot stuff

1. “Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day”: Totally tickled my inner 75-year-old child. A 21st-century companion piece to “It Happened One Night.”
2. “The Bank Job”: Spies, crooks, black militants and royal threesomes converge in this gloriously tangled British heist thriller.
3. “Horton Hears a Who!”: I meant what I said and I said what I meant: Dr. Seuss haters can go get bent.
4. “The Counterfeiters”: German thriller boasts added “currency” after last month’s Oscar win. At the Harkins Camelview.
5. “In Bruges”: Still the year’s weirdest, rowdiest comedy. Also at the Harkins Camelview.

Cool stuff

1. “10,000 B.C.”: The story of an ancient warrior named Baku (Nathanael Baring). It means “he who shaves his armpits and wears hair extensions.”
2. “Chaos Theory”: Like a zombified version of the Ryan Reynolds comedy “Definitely, Maybe”: No soul, bad for brain.
3. “Bonneville”: If this bonding fantasy about retirement-age Mormon women can’t make a splash in the East Valley, is there hope for it anywhere?
4. “Never Back Down”: Formulaic mixed martial arts flick might as well be called “Save the Last Swipe-Kick.”
5. “Semi-Pro”: Will Ferrell needs another “Stranger Than Fiction.”
