Movie critic Craig Outhier's irreverent guide to the best and worst of what's now playing in theaters. This week: Frances McDormand's "Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day" warms our critic's heart, while "Witless Protection" really, really frostbites.

1. “Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day”: Frances McDormand in her best role since “Fargo.” A fun, fizzy blast of romance and nostalgia.
2. “The Bank Job”: Oh, those Brits with their ironic understatement. Calling this a “heist flick” is like calling Hitler a “naughty scamp.”
3. “The Counterfeiters”: “Die Falscher” is in da house. Oscar winner for best foreign language film opens exclusively at the Harkins Camelview.
4. “Taxi to the Dark Side”: Ditto for Best Documentary Feature.
5. “10,000 B.C.”: Go for the special effects, stay for the prehistoric bikinis. New from the director of “Independence Day.” |

1. “Witless Protection”: Watching a Larry the Cable Guy movie is the cinematic equivalent of huffing airplane glue. Intervention is key.
2. “Bonneville”: Like “Thelma and Louise” without guns or sex, and Tom Skerritt as Brad Pitt.
3. “Fool’s Gold”: Bad reviews bounce off Matthew McConaughey’s abs like so many rubber arrows. A solid hit for the bongo meister.
4. “Jumper”: The kids these days, with their iPhones and powers of teleportation. I just can’t relate.
5. “Semi-Pro”: Will Ferrell bangs one off the rim. Next up: whooping it up with Chaka in the “Land of the Lost.”
