ROOM TO PARTY: Ra Sushi at Dana Park in Mesa is a little larger and has a more open feel than the restaurant’s other locations.

Ra Sushi at Dana Park shopping center is open and airy compared with the Tempe, Ahwatukee Foothills and downtown Scottsdale locations. But like the other locations — there are five — it has that trendy, hip, rock ’n’ roll vibe. And there’s not an empty seat at the bar when we stop in.

The scene: Ra Sushi at Dana Park shopping center is open and airy compared with the Tempe, Ahwatukee Foothills and downtown Scottsdale locations. But like the other locations — there are five — it has that trendy, hip, rock ’n’ roll vibe. And there’s not an empty seat at the bar when we stop in.

Like its sister locations, the 5,000-square-foot restaurant and bar, which opened in December, features a lot of red. Large red globes are suspended from the ceiling. Two patios have heat lamps, steel tables and chairs, and red umbrellas.

Two flat-screen TVs are showing a basketball game by the bar, where a friendly bartender asks us every few minutes if we’re ready for a shot. And when he’s not pushing shots, he’s amusing his customers with anecdotes.

The menu: An eclectic menu of sushi. We love the Tootsy Maki, a mix of crab, shrimp and cucumber topped with crunchy tempura and drizzled with a sweet eel sauce. Other offerings include tempura, beef and chicken teriyaki, seared ahi tuna, noodles and cocktails such as Tsunami Punch (a 60-ounce blend of cold sake, liqueurs and tropical juices served in a fishbowl).

The music: A mix of punk, rock and hip-hop. AFI, The Cure and AC/DC are a few of the bands we hear throughout the restaurant and bar.

Happy hour: Discounted food and cocktails 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. daily ranging from $1 to $10.

The verdict: The club atmosphere at Ra Sushi has given Dana Park a nightlife boost. We look forward to more bars opening in the area.
