Before last June it had been two decades since 1980s hitmakers The Police had played a show in the Valley. But now, with the announcement that the band will play the Cricket Pavilion on May 24, they’ll give their fans a second local gig in less than a year.

The Police (singer/bassist Sting, guitarist Andy Summers and drummer Stewart Copeland) broke up acrimoniously in 1985 after scoring such post-punk hits as “Roxanne,” “Message in a Bottle,” “Don’t Stand So Close To Me” and “Every Breath You Take,” and for years, through sniping in the press, it looked as though the band would never play the reunion tour that longtime fans clamored for.

The band’s 2007 tour was a massive success, with The Police playing sold out shows across the U.S. — including a June show at US Airways Arena in Phoenix; see review and photos — and earning accolades from fans and the press alike (Billboard Magazine and Pollstar both called the tour the “Tour of the Year), and the band is returning to the States in 2008 to play cities and venues they missed the first time around.

Elvis Costello and The Imposters will open the show.

Tickets for the show, $40-$225, go on sale 10 a.m. Monday, Feb. 25, at the Cricket Pavilion box office, 2121 N. 83rd Ave., Phoenix, all Ticketmaster outlets and online at livenation.com.
