Tom Cruise in "Cocktail" isn't the only bartender with flair. The Tavern on Mill offers a laid-back vibe and tasty libations.

The scene: The Tavern on Mill reminds me of a bar I stumbled into when I was in Hermosa Beach a few years ago. It has that beach-bar feel with surfboards hung on the wooden walls — some even hang from the ceiling — and a large, open feel (the bar is more than 7,000 square feet). There are more than 30 screens, some above the bar, spread throughout the Tavern.

Unlike a lot of bars on Mill, The Tavern seems to appeal to people in their 20s to upper 30s. There are two decent-sized patios (one out front and one out back with an additional bar) where people kick back with tall beers. Inside, there’s a dining area with tables and chairs, a nice dance floor where people bump and grind on weekend nights and an inside bar with a SoCo Lime machine, which is a novelty in Valley bars and clubs.

On the weekends, a long line typically forms after 10 p.m.

The menu: Burgers, burros, tacos, sandwiches, wraps, wings and salads along with a specialty cocktail menu with $6 libations such as the Red Bull Cherry Bomb (Red Bull with Effen cherry vodka), Fruit Cocktail (Skyy melon, Skyy berry, cranberry juice and triple sec) and Tavern Hurricane (Appleton Estate rum, Southern Comfort, orange juice, pineapple juice and grenadine).

The music: A DJ spins Top 40 Wednesday through Saturday nights.

Happy hour: $1 off well, wine and beer all day Monday and $1 off well, wine and beer 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday.

The verdict: With its laid-back, breezy feel, the only thing missing from The Tavern on Mill is the beach. However, it’s still a fun place to day drink and spend a weekend night.

Hours: 11 a.m. to 2 a.m. Monday through Friday and 9 a.m. to 2 a.m. Saturday and Sunday.
