| Poets and performers celebrate Poe's posthumous birthday | ||||||||||||||||||||||
| By Chris Page, Get Out | ||||||||||||||||||||||
| January 17, 2008 | ||||||||||||||||||||||
Then again, this is his birthday. Come Saturday, the father of horror turns a posthumous 199. And that’s no time to be gloomy. It’s time to party. Saturday night, East Valley spoken word organization Anthology Inc. will present an evening of satire, songs and sketches based on the spirit of Poe’s work, at Scottsdale’s Chyro Arts Venue. In its seventh year, “The Poe Show” offers a lighter side of the Bard of Baltimore. “Poe had a lot of funny stuff,” says Robert X. Planet, a prolific Scottsdale theatrical director and designer, who for years has staged his own Poe celebrations around Halloween. Planet stumbled upon the Anthology event a few years back, and now he serves as what he calls “the one person who performs a piece by Poe.” (Last year, he read “The Imp of the Perverse” — a short story, though indeed witty, nevertheless about a devious murderer who makes a surprise confession.) “I’ve been obsessed by Poe since I was in grade school,” Planet says. “When I was in fourth grade, I wrote a parody called 'Raven Mad.’” The enduring appeal of Poe’s work, Planet says, is that “it’s short and it’s to the point and it’s dramatic and exciting.” He also concedes: “All teenagers go through a goth thing.” >> “The Poe Show” starts 8 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 19, at Chyro Arts Venue, 1330 N. Scottsdale Road, Scottsdale. $10 in advance, $15 at the door. (480) 258-2329 or www.anthology.org. Contact Chris Page by email, or phone (480) 898-5656 |
