Click here to view a slideshow of pictures of nightlife at Tempe Marketplace. “I think once they put some more bars in, people are going to start coming to Tempe Marketplace to do more than shop,” says Brandon Martinez, 28, of Tempe, nursing a Corona inside San Felipe’s Cantina . “Once people can bar hop, I think you’ll see a younger crowd.” Tempe Marketplace is in its nightlife infancy — so far. Right now San Felipe’s and Dave & Buster’s are the two big draws, but Lucille’s Smokehouse Bar-B-Que has jumped on the nightlife train, offering patrons live blues performances from local and regional artists from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays. Cadillac Ranch, a country/rock bar and restaurant with a mechanical bull, is scheduled to open before the year ends. Singer Carlos Santana will open his Mexican-themed chain restaurant, Maria Maria, next year, along with The Keg Steakhouse & Bar and D’Arcy McGee’s Irish Pub. The District Stage, which boasts a 300-seat amphitheater and jumbo LED video wall, features local musicians from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. Thursday through Saturday. TheTempe Marketplace played host to the SoCo Music Experience, a 21-and-older music festival that featured local and national acts, in October. KEDJ (103.9 FM) hosts live bands on the stage the third Thursday of every month. National rock band Unwritten Law and Valley rockers Good With Grenades are slated to perform on Thursday, Dec. 20. “I can’t wait to see how Tempe Marketplace compares to Desert Ridge,” says Regina Moraga, 30, of Tempe, who is playing a game of Skee-Ball with her boyfriend at Dave & Buster’s. “I think they need to get a dance club in here. That will help them attract the club crowd. … Tempe people are looking for something different then Mill Avenue. Mill is just so tired now. It’s over. Been there, done that. Hopefully Tempe Marketplace can breathe new life into Tempe.” “Everyone’s always looking for the new best thing,” Martinez says. “This may be it.” Tempe Marketplace is at 2000 E. Rio Salado Parkway.
