The 40-something woman clad in red velvet tank top, jeans and tall black boots is grinding with a much younger guy on the dance floor.

Around 10 p.m. the lounge, in the Agua Caliente plaza in the former Streets of New York pizzeria and next to chic lounge Minx, starts to fill up with polished people in their 20s to 40s.

They fill the dance floor, the bar or the large patio, which is lined with wooden booths and overlooks Shea Boulevard. Inside, several flat screen TVs display an image of a shadowy figure dancing. The club — which is inspired by Tao nightclub at the Venetian resort in Las Vegas and has a sister location in San Jose, Calif. — features two dance floors, two bars, red crystal chandeliers and rich brown walls. There’s also suede sofas in the VIP sections and satin-covered beds by the dance floors, along with statues of various gods and Buddhas. Lingerie-clad cocktail waitresses circle the nightspot, while the male bartenders wear T-shirts and pajama pants.

Scottsdale’s Korvie Koga says he’s a fan of the new club, which opened last month and, for now, is only open on weekends.

“We needed more nightlife up here,” says Koga, 32. “I definitely like the setup of the club, with the two different rooms. The patio is great and so is the music.”
Shayna Johanssen agrees.

“It’s nice to see more nightlife up in this area,” says Johanssen, 28, of Scottsdale.

“It’s finally getting to the point to where there’s more to do up here and we don’t have to drive to downtown every weekend.”

Taste Ultra Lounge, 6910 E. Shea Blvd., Scottsdale, is open 9 p.m. to 2 a.m. Fridays and Saturdays. Free for women and $10 for men. Free for everyone if you arrive before 11 p.m. and get on the guest list through azvip@tasteultralounge.com. (480) 951-4466 or tasteultralounge.com.
