BEST MOVIE THEATER
Harkins Cine Capri at Tempe Marketplace
2000 E. Rio Salado Drive, Tempe, (602) 222-4275
HarkinsTheatres.com

This reincarnation of an old Phoenix theater boasts the largest screen and most seats of any non-Imax theater in Arizona. Now, if only they’d make some decent movies ...

BEST LOCAL MUSIC VENUE
The One Place
825 N. First St., Phoenix, (602) 541-3835
myspace.com/oneplacevenue

One of the newest venues in the downtown arts district, The One Place is a nonprofit venue for local bands (like George Moshington, pictured) and up-and-coming touring bands. However, don’t plan to book your show on a Sunday, because The One Place doubles as a church.

We're excited about the new Harkins Cine Capri in Tempe. (phtoo by Jed Dougherty, Special to Get Out)
BEST VENUE FOR NATIONAL BANDS
Marquee Theatre
730 N. Mill Ave., Tempe, (480) 829-0707
luckymanonline.com

Bands such as AFI, Devendra Banhart and Bowling for Soup grace the stage at this downtown Tempe venue. Downside: You’ll need to pay to park. Or just walk across the Mill Avenue bridge.

BEST KARAOKE
Yucca Tap Room
29 W. Southern Ave., Tempe, (480) 967-4777
yuccatap.com

Each Thursday, this Tempe dive bar hosts your standard karaoke — then follows it up with “Rockaroke,” where you can sing along to any song the resident live band can figure out how to play.

BEST LIVE THEATRE
ASU Prism Theater
970 E. University Drive, Tempe, (480) 965-6536
theatre.asu.edu/production/prism.htm

Want to sit in the dark and watch scantily clad ASU girls run around on a stage? Try Prism Theater instead of the strip club, and get some culture, too.

BEST PLACE TO FEEL LIKE A KID AGAIN
Amazing Jake’s Pizza Factory
1830 E. Baseline Road, Mesa, (480) 926-7499
amazingjakes.com

If your pride can take waiting in some lines with swarms of little kids, you’ll be rewarded with all-you-can-eat pizza, video games, skee ball, laser tag, go-karts, bumper cars and a host of other joyfully juvenile activities.

BEST ON-CAMPUS MAKE-OUT SPOT
Hayden Library
asu.edu/lib/libraries/hayden

With several floors and various reading rooms, rows of shelves, staircases and bathrooms, you can certainly find a quiet spot for some serious lip-locking here. It’s a good option, if you don’t want to bother your roommate.

BEST DAY TRIP
Bisbee
discoverbisbee.com

A beach in Rocky Point, Mexico. (Get Out file photo)
Bisbee is an eclectic and enjoyable mining town on Arizona’s southern border surrounded by some of the most beautiful countryside in the Southwest.

BEST WEEKEND TRIP (OVER 21)
Las Vegas
visitlasvegas.com

Sin City is only five hours away. An adult wonderland of gambling, roller coasters, gaudy and imbecilic architecture, women of the night and more gambling awaits those who dare.

BEST WEEKEND TRIP (UNDER 21)
Rocky Point (aka Puerto Peñasco, Mexico)

If you can see over the bar, you can order a drink at this fishing village-turned-spring break destination. Enjoy sandy beaches, firecrackers and beer all at once.

It's worth heading out east for the Peralta Trail, when you get this kind of view. (photo by Jed Dougherty, Special to Get Out)
BEST HIKING SPOT
Peralta Trail
End of Peralta Road, FS 77, Superstition Mountains

Anyone who thinks the Arizona desert is a dry, dirty, boring place needs to hike this trail. It’s a beautiful trail with near constant photo-worthy vistas of the Superstition Mountains.

BEST PLACE FOR WATER FUN
Salt River Tubing
1320 N. Bush Highway, (480) 984-3305
saltrivertubing.com

An ASU staple is tubing down the Salt River, which typically starts in May and runs into September. Start planning, folks, because it really is lots of fun.

BEST RADIO STATION
The Blaze (1260 AM)
theblaze1260.com

ASU’s student-run radio station is perhaps the only one that offers a true alternative — music and genres that the corporate entities ignore. Yeah, the signal’s weak, but you can listen live on the Web site. Full disclosure: While one of the writers worked for The Blaze, she didn’t get say over this category.

What Laura Says Thinks and Feels demands our attention with its folky jam tunes. (photo by Joe Trevino, Special to Get Out)

BEST LOCAL BAND
What Laura Says Thinks and Feels
myspace.com/whatlaurasaysthinksandfeels

While the name might be hard to remember, you can’t soon forget this Tempe indie jam band. Playing up to five shows a week, the band creates a buzz with the originality to back it up. (Local spotlight)

BEST PARTY SPOT
13th Street and Farmer Avenue, Tempe (Historic Tempe District)

As more ASU students have started renting homes rather than apartments, this neighborhood hosts the best parties in historic homes with character, all within a short bike ride of each other.

BEST PLACE TO DISPLAY YOUR ART
Abandoned art store
University Drive and Myrtle Avenue, Tempe

“SAVE ART” is painted over this abandoned art store. More work is added consistently, turning the empty building into a silent protest against the corporate takeover of Tempe.

BEST OPEN MIKE
Poetry Slam at Mill’s End Café and Creperie
310 S. Mill Ave., Tempe, (480) 829-0755

A twist on the usual Mill Avenue open mike, this stellar coffee spot offers a poetry slam every Friday night for those who have something to say.

BEST WORKOUT SANS WEIGHTS
Climbmax Gym
1330 W. Auto Drive, Tempe, (480) 626-7755
climbmaxgym.com

Climbmax Gym already sports some of the finest indoor rock climbing in the Southwest, and it’s not finished. Opening fully in September, it’s a workout for beginners and experts.
