2007 Devil Picks: Guide for ASU students
Share
Related Links
ASU can be overwhelming. We know. We’ve been there.

We want to help you navigate your new city, and finding the killer bars, hot date spots and kitchsy shops is our thing. We called upon current ASU students Jed Dougherty and Ashley Harris and our most recent college grad on staff, Chelsea Ide (ASU 2006), to name the hot spots near campus.

We hit the new bars on Mill Avenue, grimey dive bars and every clothing store you can imagine to find the best. So, we’ve spared you from trolling the streets of Tempe by offering up this year’s Devil Picks issue. Inside you’ll find everything you need to be hip at ASU from where to get stellar dorm room furniture to unique work outs to which bar is best for spotting celebrities.

BEST FIRST DATE ON PAYDAY
Café Boa
398 S. Mill Ave., Tempe, (480)968-9112
cafeboa.com

Without a doubt, Café Boa is the best place to eat on Mill (mostly because it’s the only classy non-chain restaurant on the strip). Hit it up for the terrific wine selection, sophisticated atmosphere and good-looking staff.

Pita Jungle is delicious without being expensive. (Get Out file photo)
BEST FIRST DATE ON A BUDGET
Pita Jungle
1250 E. Apache Blvd., Tempe, (480)804-0234
For other locations see pitajungle.com

Pita Jungle’s hip and eclectic atmosphere is matched nicely by the restaurant’s unique take on Mediterranean food. Plus, it’s cheaper than most places with half its style. (2 for $20 review)

BEST VEGAN
Udupi
1639 N. Scottsdale Road, Tempe, (480) 994-8787

At this all-vegetarian south Indian restaurant, 90 percent of the spicy dishes are vegan.

BEST CAMPUS FOOD
M’ai Island Grill
122 E. University Drive, Tempe, (480) 966-6533

Tucked away just North of campus, this restaurant features authentic Hawaiian-style cuisine, including grilled chicken with rice and the signature macaroni salad.

BEST HAMBURGER
The Chuck Box
202 E. University Drive, Tempe, (480) 968-4712
thechuckbox.com

A Tempe cornerstone, The Chuck Box grills your burger over a wood fire while you watch. The fried zucchini is also a must.

BEST DELI
Dilly’s Deli
414 W. University Drive, Tempe, (480) 929-0111
For other locations visit dillysdeli.com

There are a few different delis around ASU vying for your sandwich dollar, but none is finer than this local chain, featuring yummy (and fun-to-say) menu items such as the Doozy, the Yahoo and the Dilly’s Dilly.

Don't miss the stellar sushi at Sushi 101. (Photo by Jed Dougherty, Special to Get Out)
BEST SUSHI
Sushi 101
920 E. University Drive, Tempe, (480) 317-0101
sushi-101.com

This is Arizona. The desert. There are no fish here. Maybe that’s why good sushi is so hard to come by in the Valley of the Sun. These guys actually pull it off. Come to happy hour from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m.

BEST BREAKFAST INSTEAD OF CLASS
Ejoy Cafe
11 E. Seventh St., Tempe, (480) 237-0569

When you run out of Pop Tarts, run by Ejoy and grab a quick muffin, or stay for the egg sandwiches and breakfast bagels. Ejoy will aid your caffiene addition, too.

BEST COFFEE
Three Roots
1020 S. Mill Ave., Tempe, (480) 966-4949

People talk too much and too loudly at Starbucks. Try this locally owned spot for a low-key lounge to study, join in a heated political debate or just kick back in the living room-styled joint.

BEST PIZZA
Slices
11 E. Sixth St., Tempe, (480) 966-4681
slicespizzajoint.com

ASU Senior James Wylie enjoys a sandwich at Cheba Hut. (Photo by Jed Dougherty, Special to Get Out)
The Downtown Tempe location of this popular Boston-style pizza joint is walking distance from campus and the Mill Avenue bars and restaurants. Plus, it’s open ‘til 3 a.m. on weekends in case, you know, you’re “studying” late. (2 for $20 review)

BEST CHEAP LUNCH
Cheba Hut
960 W. University Drive, Tempe, (480) 446-0088
ChebaHut.com

Only a stoner would ask for a peanut butter and jelly sub sandwich, so it’s not a surprise that this place has it along with loads of other toasted subs. (2 for $20 review)

BEST CHEAP DINNER
Cornish Pasty Co.
960 W. University Drive, Tempe, (480) 894-6261
cornishpastyco.com

A pasty, the signature dish, is pretty much a glorified Hot Pocket. That said, Hot Pockets are pretty damn good to begin with. Delicious dinner for two with drinks for less than 25 bucks.

BEST POST-DRINKING FOOD
La Pita Bar and Grill
505 S. Mill Ave., Tempe, (480) 784-6700

Located right in the middle of the Mill Avenue bar scene, La Pita offers a healthy alternative to your usual late night pizza run after drinking. Also: it’s within stumbling distance of the dorms.

BEST PLACE FOR A HANGOVER BREAKFAST
Harlow’s Cafe
1021 W. University Drive, Tempe, (480) 829-9444
When you’re feeling gross after a beer-filled Saturday night, you need somewhere dim with greasy diner food. Harlow’s has it.

BEST MEXICAN FOOD
Restaurant Mexico
423 S. Mill Avenue, Tempe, (480) 967-3280

After a late night at the bars, nothing feels better than a greasy breakfast at Harlow's (Get Out file photo)
Restaurant Mexico’s central Mexican fare is fresher and cheaper than most sit-down restaurants, with welcoming service and good margaritas.

BEST DESSERT
Oregano’s pizza cookie
523 W. University Drive, Tempe, (480) 858-0501
For other locations visit oreganos.com

The cookie comes in white chocolate macadamia nut, chocolate chip, peanut butter or a mixture of the three with three big scoops of fresh vanilla bean ice cream atop the warm skillet cookie.

BEST DORM DELIVERY OPTION
Silvermine Subs
414 S. Mill Avenue, Tempe, (480) 317-9700
For other locations see silverminesubs.com

Its late. You’re hungry, drunk and sick of Ramen. So who you gonna call? Silvermine! It’s open until 3 a.m. even during the week, and it delivers faster than pizza places.
