At Slices in downtown Tempe, more than 30 types of pizza are available by the slice.

2 for $20: Tempe's Slices is student, pizza lover favorite

Almost every ASU student is familiar with Slices, the small, storefront pizzeria occupying that transitional zone between the west edge of campus and downtown Tempe’s Mill Avenue.

With no dedicated parking of its own, Slices caters to a mostly walk-up crowd of students, Mill Avenue clubgoers and, on this day, two newspaper guys looking for a couple of slices (photos).

The mood

As mentioned, Slices is really small, and seating is limited — just three tables and two short counters. If everyone sucks in their stomach, you can fit about a dozen people inside. There’s little in the way of decor.

A tiny sidewalk patio with three additional tables caters to those willing to brave the triple-digit temperatures.

The food

As we wait in line, we study more than a dozen eclectic pizzas behind the glass counter. Large slices ($2.50 for cheese, $2.75 for one topping, $3 for two or more) are popped into the oven for a minute and served piping hot on paper plates.

I go with a slice of chicken parmigiana, which comes with big cubes of tender chicken, and a slice of meat lovers, which has pepperoni, sausage, bacon and ham.

My co-worker opts for a slice of meat lovers and another of veggie, which includes peppers, onions, mushrooms and broccoli.

One of the inside tables — complete with shakers of Parmesan cheese and crushed red pepper — is abandoned just as we receive our plates, allowing us to forgo the uncovered, unmisted patio on this 110-degree day and enjoy our meal in relative comfort.

The drinks

We get a large Coke and a large Diet Coke ($1.75 apiece).

The damage ($15.50)

With ASU starting fall classes in two weeks, this will probably be our last lunchtime visit to this Slices. Fortunately, a larger Slices (with a liquor license) is scheduled to open this fall in the Tempe Marketplace.
