Prescott race sends bikers seriously uphill and down

Solange Whitehead swore she’d never do it again.

She flipped over the handlebars of her bike during last year’s Whiskey Off-Road, an endurance mountain bike race in the Prescott National Forest. Whitehead endured the 25-mile ride, which featured an punishing uphill climb and an extremely intense downhill.

“I just wanted to stop,” says the Scottsdale resident, who still finished third overall.

But there’s something about the Whiskey Off-Road that keeps mountain bikers coming back for more. Perhaps it’s the breathtaking views coming down the mountain, the camaraderie (“Mountain bikers are really nice,” says Whitehead) or the victory beer.

Whatever the reason, Whitehead and 600 of her fellow mountain bikers will gather at the starting line in downtown Prescott early Saturday morning.

“It is murder,” the Scottsdale resident says. “I can’t believe I’m doing this again. It’s over 4,000 feet of climbing.”

In its four-year history, the Whiskey Off-Road has quickly become one of the most popular mountain biking events in Arizona. Riders from all over the country will blaze the single track trail up into the mountains. Riders choose from three distances: 15-proof, 25-proof and the 50-proof.

“The bike course is extraordinary,” says Todd Sadow, president of Epic Rides and the race’s organizer.

Proceeds from the event will benefit the Yavapai County Food Bank and Prescott Alternative Transport.
