| Metalhead revisits the hair-band era Sundays in Scottsdale | |||||||||||||||||||||||

“Metal! Head!” “Metal! Head!” The crowd is chanting those words at a packed Martini Ranch on a recent Sunday night during Metalhead’s weekly gig at the downtown Scottsdale bar. Scantily clad women in their 20s and 30s groove by the stage as young professionals, frat boys and jocks pump their fists into the air to the Valley cover band’s version of Metallica’s “Enter Sandman.” In addition to playing ’80s hits from Bon Jovi, Poison, Cinderella, Skid Row and Warrant, the four members of Metalhead also dress the part, donning big-haired wigs, makeup, spandex and shiny pants. Metalhead ringleader and lead singer Lucky, who is wearing sunglasses at night, takes a swig from a bottle of Stoli Blueberi vodka and flirts with the ladies between songs. The guys — including Steel Wulffe, G-String and Tommi Legg — also spend a lot of time riffing on each other.
“I like their attitude,” Appell, 29, of Scottsdale, says of the group, which released a live album a few months ago. “The songs they play are among some of my all-time favorites.” Appell, who lists the group as his No. 1 friend on MySpace, says he’s been attending the night, which started at Martini Ranch in June 2003, for three years. “I was out of work and had nothing better to do on a Sunday night,” he says. “These guys are great at what they do and nothing can compare to them. They also draw in a large crowd of fast women which attracts 29-year-old adolescents like myself.” Chandler bartender Lauren Galdarisi, 23, says the band’s appeal is simple. “They put on a good show,” she says. “I know almost all the songs, and they play a lot of my favorites. That’s what I want when I see live music. “I think Metalhead has been successful because they chose a genre to cover that has such mass appeal. … You’re going to get fans who grew up listening to the music as well as younger fans who just happen to know the stuff. “I mean, who doesn’t know 'Pour Some Sugar on Me’? Some of their songs are fun no matter what. It doesn’t matter how many times you’ve heard them.” 5 Questions With Lucky Q: What’s one of the coolest things that’s happened during a Metalhead show? A: Playing the Bird’s Nest and having a completely inebriated Captain-and-Cokes Bill Murray introduce us on stage wearing Metalhead gear. That was funny. Q: Where else can fans see Metalhead play? A: Tuesdays at Cactus Moon in Tucson and Thursdays at the Library (Bar & Grill in Tempe). Q: What’s the best part about being in Metalhead? A: The coolest thing, honestly, is that fans turn these into little mini rock concerts. We always wanted to make it a party, make it interactive, make them go home with as much of a sore throat from screaming all night as I do. Sometimes I don’t even have to sing. I can just throw the mike into the audience and they’ll finish the song. Q: Do you guys have groupies? A: Why wouldn’t there be? Q: What are some of your favorite songs to play? A: The one that gets the biggest crowd reaction is my favorite song of the night. That’s all I do it for. I don’t do it for the money or the glory or the sex after the show or during the show.
