Video games for under $20

So you think the Playstation 3 is too expensive, you still can’t find a Wii and, for whatever reason, you haven’t gotten around to buying an Xbox 360. Don’t worry. Not only are you not alone, you’re in a good spot — go ahead, dust off your old Playstation 2, Game Cube or (original) Xbox and head to any of the many places that sell video games.

All of these high-quality titles can be found for $19.99.

Playstation 2

Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas: All of the GTA games are a misanthropic blast on the PS2, and this is the latest in the series (until No. 4 comes out this fall). Be warned: You may have the urge to run over pedestrians after playing too long.

Destroy All Humans: Like “Mars Attacks,” it’s a takeoff on 1950s alien invasion movies, but with a twist: Instead of playing as the humans, you take the role as the invaders looking to, well, destroy all humans. All the mayhem of Grand Theft Auto with none of the blood.

Sonic Mega Collection Plus: If you’re a 16-bit fan but traded in your old systems for a Hootie and the Blowfish CD back in the day, look no further than this compilation that has just about every Sonic the Hedgehog game released for the Genesis and Game Gear.

GameCube

Super Mario Sunshine: Some die-hard Mario fans shunned this title upon its release in 2002 for its frankly silly premise (Mario uses his skills to clean up pollution on a magical island), but with Super Mario Galaxy for the Wii still months away, it’ll tide you over.

Resident Evil 4: The latest installment in this zombie-killing franchise starts with an interesting premise: no zombies, just parasite-controlled humans called “Ganados.” Probably the best game in the history of the GameCube. Tip: Pretend like those Milla Jovovich movies don’t exist.

The Legend of Zelda: Four Swords Adventure:
Yeah, Twilight Princess is the game to get on the Wii, but you’ll look like a fakester if you don’t cut your teeth and save the land of Hyrule on some older Link escapades. Works with the Game Boy Advance if you have one.

Xbox

Halo: Xbox rose to prominence based on the strength of its first-person shooter games, and this one, five years later, completely re-wrote the rules of the genre with its emphasis on multiplayer action. Warm up your firing skills for Halo 3, coming out later this year.

Midnight Club 3: Although the developer Rockstar is known primarily for the Grand Theft Auto games, they’ve also gotten acclaim for this racing series, which emphasizes speed over realistic driving conditions. Local connection: “Pain” by Jimmy Eat World is on the soundtrack.

Call of Duty 2: Big Red One: Another popular first-person shooter, but instead of futuristic battles, you’re fighting in decidedly low-tech World War II. The mainstream appeal of the Call of Duty games extended to an episode of “The Office” last fall, where we saw the Stamford branch playing.
