Flicka’s Baja Grill has the laid back vibe of a beach cantina on the coast of Rocky Point, sporting a breezy outdoor patio, a couple of grass thatched bars, a variety of Mexican dishes, classic bar food and a plethora of Mexican cervezas.

2 for $20: Flicka's in Scottsdale has everything but a beach

Modeled after the restaurants lining the coast of Mexico, Flicka’s Baja Grill in Scottsdale has got the ambience of a seaside joint down pat: The only thing missing is the beach itself. The night life now swings at Flicka’s — the place has a couple of inside bars, a large dance floor and live entertainment — but it was the authentic beachside grub that brought my companion and me to Flicka’s for lunch.

The mood

At Flicka’s, you can sit inside, where a couple of massive fish tanks and tiki-style bars accentuate the beach vibe, or out on the patio. Taking advantage of a balmy afternoon with temps in the mid-70s, we opt to sit on the patio, where we can soak up the sun and take in a cool breeze.

The food

The menu is diverse, with Mexican food items mingling with such bar food staples as burgers, hot dogs, wings, buffalo and teriyaki chicken sandwiches and mozzarella sticks. I order the Macho Nachos ($6.75) with steak. My companion goes with the shrimp tacos ($6.50).

The nachos arrive heaped with melting cheese, sour cream and guacamole, jalapeños, pico de gallo and chunks of steak. Some people might think all nachos are the same, but I fancy myself an expert, and what sets these ’chos apart from an ordinary order is the marinated steak, which makes every bite a pleasure.

My companion loves the shrimp tacos, which are the street-vendor-sized tacos you can get south of the border, served on corn tortillas with a side of rice and beans (pintos, not a messy glop of refried).

The drinks

It’s tempting to order Coronas, but we go with iced teas ($2 each).
